Expanding Ontario’s Renewable Power Generation Potential
In late November 2009, Capital Power acquired the Port Dover and Nanticoke (PDN) Wind Project from Tribute Resources Inc (TSX-V: TRB). The Project, proposed for Haldimand County and Norfolk County, would have the potential to generate approximately 105 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy and would be developed through the Ontario Power Authority’s (OPA) recently launched Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) program.
On April 8th, the Ontario Government announced that a total of 184 renewable energy projects, of at least 500 kilowatts in size, had received a FIT contract representing about 2,421 MW of renewable power during the first contract round. The Port Dover and Nanticoke Wind Project was one of the successful projects selected for a FIT contract. More information on the announcement can be found at http://www.powerauthority.on.ca.
Working with the Community
Capital Power is looking forward to building upon existing stakeholder and community relations for the Project. Our goal is to develop a project that is both environmentally sound and respects the values and interests of the local community.
A Notice of Proposal to Engage in a Project under the Renewable Energy Approvals (REA) process has been filed. The Notice of Proposal to Engage in a Project and information on the December public open houses can be found here.
Capital Power is pleased to host two additional open houses on June 8th and June 9th to provide the community the opportunity to further engage in the REA process for this proposed project. This will give those community members who were unable to attend our first open houses, the opportunity to learn about the project and provide comments on the proposed study area, the REA process and requirements, as well as, the identified preliminary environmental constraints. The information provided at these open houses will be similar to what was presented at our December open houses. The Notice of our June Public Open Houses can be found here.
Environmental Assessment and Public Consultation Process
In September 2009, the Government of Ontario introduced the Renewable Energy Approval (REA) process. Capital Power will undertake an environmental assessment and public consultation process within the REA process, which was initiated for the Project by Tribute Resources Inc. More information on the Ontario REA can be found at http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/en/business/green-energy/.
A draft Project Description Report is now available for download. Please note that this is a draft report and is subject to change, including information on the preliminary turbine layout which will change based on the results of the environmental studies, turbine selection and public consultation.
Further information about the Port Dover and Nanticoke Wind Project and the timing of the consultation process will appear in local newspapers, by direct mail to residents in the Project Location Area and on this website.
