Genesee Generating Station

The Genesee Generating Station has been in operation since 1989 and is located approximately 80 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.  Genesee is comprised of three units - known as Genesee 1, Genesee 2 and Genesee 3.  The first unit (Genesee 2) entered commercial operation in October of 1989.  The second unit (Genesee 1) began operating in October 1994.  Each unit has the capacity to generate 410 MW of electricity.

Genesee 3 is a 490 MW supercritical pulverized coal-fired generating unit , jointly owned by Capital Power and TransAlta.  Genesee 3 began commercial operation in March 2005 as Canada's first supercritical coal unit.

 Regulatory

Genesee 3 GHG Amendment Application
Capital Power is requesting Alberta Utilities Commission and Alberta Environment amend its current Approvals for Genesee 3 (“GP3”) to remove requirements to offsetting greenhouse gas emissions to a level equivalent to those from a natural gas combined cycle power plant.  GP3 will be required to comply with the requirements of the Specified Gas Emitters Regulation, a comprehensive GHG regulatory framework applicable to all large industrial facilities in Alberta, including fossil fuel-fired power generating facilities such as GP3.

Genesee Long-Term Water Licence Project
On June 2, 2010 Capital Power submitted a new water license application under the Water Act to Alberta Environment requesting an additional 12 million cubic meters of water from the North Saskatchewan River. The additional water volume is required to improve water quality for plant operations, and the quality of the water that is discharged from the cooling pond back into the North Saskachewan River.

The Genesee Generating Station is currently operating under a one year Temporary Diversion License (TDL) that Alberta Environment issued last year which is allowing the Genesee Operations to withdraw the increased volume of water it requires for its operations. A new water licence will offer a permanent solution to the Generating Station’s water needs.
